Mac Pro - Early 2008, fans running almost continuously - can they be switched off while recording audio ?

I have a MacPro, early 2008 running fine. I've just beefed the memory up to 18Gb and it has three HDs. The fans seem to run continuously although the machine is cool to the touch both inside and out. I want to silence the fans while I record audio, how do I go about it ?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.4), Also got MacBook and MacBook Pro

Sounds like the RAM you installed did not have the required temperature sensors. When those are not present the System Management Controller defaults to running the fans at full speed..

First try resetting the SMC.

You can download a an app like Macs Fan Control

to manually control fans speed. Just not the FB-DIMM in the 2006-2008 Mac Pros run hot and fail with time. Thus, you have to ensure that they are adequately cooled
